French office director shows up at TIBE as a writer

Taipei, Jan. 29 (CNA) Patrick Bonneville, the director of the Institut Francais de Taipei, made an appearance Friday at the Taipei International Book Exhibition (TIBE) , but it had nothing to do with his duties as a diplomat.
Bonneville instead was there to introduce his book titled "La photographie Japonaise sous l'ere Meiji, " a project that had not originally been part of his plans.
Four years ago, Bonneville said, a French publisher found some old photos from Japan's Meiji period (1868-1912) collected by an organization and wanted to publish them in a book but needed someone to introduce the background of the period.
At that time, Bonneville was serving in a Southeast Asian country, but he and his wife had lived in Japan for four years and were both interested in Japanese history and culture.
He therefore agreed to write the book's preface explaining the historical context in which the photos were taken.
"Actually the photos in this book are like beautiful postcards that are not natural but carefully designed by the photographers." Bonneville revealed.
He said that Japan's Meiji period is an important era, with many disciplines worth studying, such as religion, music, tradition and culture.
Bonneville said the images in the book were actually taken from the point of view of westerners and showed a lot of imagination.
