Remaining Taiwan nationals evacuated from Peru mountain site

Taipei, Jan. 29 (CNA) Seven Taiwan nationals were among some 1,400 tourists who were evacuated Friday by helicopter from a rain-soaked mountain area in Peru, as the weather improved enough to allow local authorities to speed up the rescue operations.
Five of the Taiwanese were part of a Taiwan tour group whose 15 other members had already been airlifted from the area, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
All 20 members of the group is are now in the Peruvian capital of Lima, the ministry said in a statement.
The other two Taiwan nationals rescued Friday are backpackers who had traveled from the United States to visit the Machu Picchu archaeological site, the ministry said.
Torrential rain that began last week forced the evacuation of hundreds of visitors from the popular tourist attraction of Machu Picchu, who were stranded when train and bus routes were closed after a series of landslides and incidents of flooding.
More than 2,000 people from Taiwan visited Peru last year, with most of them making the trip around this time of the year, according to the Commercial Office of Peru in Taipei.
