Taiwan, U.S. maintain smooth communication on beef issue: official

Los Angeles, Jan. 28 (CNA) Taiwan has maintained smooth communications with the United States over the beef trade issue and will continue to discuss the issue with Washington to try to sort out their differences, Economic Affairs Minister Shih Yen-shiang said Thursday.
According to Shih, it is inevitable for trade partners to squabble, and there are many methods to resolve such disputes.
Shih said he believes Washington will assess whether seeking arbitration at the World Trade Organization (WTO) is the best way to solve the problem, because this would involve a long process and very high costs.
United States Deputy Trade Representative Dementrios Marantis said early in the day that Washington is studying all possible options, including seeking WTO arbitration, to resolve the dispute arising from Taiwan's decision to ban the import of U.S. ground beef and bovine offal.
During a transit stop in San Francisco Monday, President Ma Ying-jeou talked on the phone with 11 U.S. senators and representatives to seek their understanding of Taiwan's policy.
According to Shih, the conversations were conducted in very amiable atmosphere, and the U.S. politicians said they could understand Taiwan's position.
