The Liberty Times: Safeguarding common interests

Taiwan editorial abstract (File 4 of a daily roundup) According to an analysis prepared by the U.S. Congress, the near-term goal of China's military modernization is to settle the Taiwan problem, so China is resolved to develop a deterrent ability to intimidate the U.S. in case of incidents in the Taiwan Strait.
The analysis also points out that China's military buildup reveals a greater ambition beyond the Taiwan issue, driving the U.S.
and other countries to deploy naval forces strong enough to deter China in the Asia-Pacific region.
Although China remains hostile to Taiwan, President Ma Ying-jeou has turned a deaf ear to other countries' repeated warnings in this regard and he said in a New Year's Day address that improved cross-strait relations have won international recognition.
Ma's imaginary viewpoint follows the basic foundation of the so-called "1992 consensus " designed to promote cross-strait ties.
Actually, Ma is trying to entice Taiwan's people to jump into the unification trap baited and set by China.
Ma's China-leaning stance has provoked grave concern in the U.S., with some people saying the U.S. should consider stopping arms sales to Taiwan, remove Taiwan from its list of Asian allies and scrap the Taiwan Relations Act, while others contend that the U.S. should mull full preparations in case of a situation in the Taiwan Strait now that Ma has decided to ignore Taiwan's security. The Congress analysis is closer to the latter viewpoint.
Ma is Taiwan's president, but he has neglected the interests of Taiwan and its 23 million people by leaning toward China. There are obvious signs that his ideology and military strategy are designed to alienate the U.S. and Japan while moving closer toward China.
Regardless of what the situation will be in Taiwan or the Taiwan Strait in the coming decades, U.S. pundits are fully aware that whether Washington supports Taiwan's leader or not, the U.S. will remain firm on its stance of safeguarding Taiwan's security. From this, we can predict that the U.S. will not deviate from its stance, despite Ma's attitude.
At a time when the KMT and the Communist Party of China (CPC) are conspiring to swallow up Taiwan, Taiwan's people must show their resolve by overthrowing Ma's plan to downgrade Taiwan into an area of China through the signing of an economic cooperation framework agreement.
Once the KMT and CPC achieve their aim, Taiwan will become a battlefield in fights against democratic countries. Taiwan's people must stand up to prevent Ma from driving Taiwan to hell.
