Amazon profit climbs 71 percent in 4th qtr

Amazon.com says its fourth-quarter earnings skyrocketed 71 percent, as shoppers spent more than ever during the holiday season.
The Seattle-based Web retailer said Thursday that it earned $384 million, or 85 cents per share, in the quarter, compared with $225 million, or 52 cents per share, in the same period last year.
Revenue rose 42 percent to $9.52 billion. This includes revenue from online shoe and apparel store Zappos, which Amazon bought in late 2009.
The results blasted past estimates of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, who expected earnings of 72 cents per share on $9.04 billion in revenue.
Amazon.com Inc. did well in 2009, despite the sluggish economy, drawing shoppers with an immense selection ranging from its Kindle e-reader to kitchen gadgets.
