Pakistani scientist asks to testify at US trial

A U.S.-trained Pakistani scientist has asked to testify in her own defense against charges she tried to kill American personnel in Afghanistan.
Defense attorneys have argued that Aafia Siddiqui should be banned from testifying at her Manhattan trial. They say her "diminished capacity" would result in a "painful spectacle." Prosecutors say it would be unprecedented to deny a defendant such a basic right.
Asked Thursday by federal Judge Richard Berman if she wanted to testify, Siddiqui said, "Yes sir."
The judge asked to hear further arguments from lawyers before deciding.
Authorities describe Siddiqui as an al-Qaida supporter and say she tried to kill FBI and Army officers in Afghanistan in 2008. She denies the charges.
