National Zoo: Panda headed to base in Sichuan

The National Zoo says 4-year-old Tai Shan is headed to a panda base in Sichuan, China, next week.
The zoo says the popular young giant panda will go to the Bifengxia Panda Base in the mountains of south-central China. The zoo holds a briefing with media Thursday on the logistics of moving him.
Zoo officials announced last month that Tai Shan would be sent to China for breeding. He has been one of the biggest attractions at the zoo since his 2005 birth but is property of China.
He is scheduled to fly to China on Feb. 4. A goodbye party is set for Saturday at the zoo. The last day of public viewing is Wednesday.
Tai Shan's parents are on a 10-year, $10 million loan that expires in December.
