EU Parliament delays commission approval

The European Parliament's president says that lawmakers' vote to approve the European Union's new executive commission will likely be delayed from Jan. 26 until Feb. 9.
Jerzy Buzek said in a Wednesday statement that the assembly needs more time to interview Bulgaria's new nominee as aid commissioner, Kristalina Georgieva, after former foreign minister Rumiana Jeleva was forced to withdraw over alleged financial misdealings.
The parliament may interview Georgieva on Feb. 3, he says.
This delays the European Commission taking up office until next month. The executive drafts EU laws and negotiates treaties on behalf of the EU's 27 governments. There are 27 EU commissioners-designate.
