Economic Daily News: Is Taiwan lost?

Taiwan editorial abstract (File 5 of a daily roundup) It is beyond doubt that people are the foundation of any country and the raison d'etre of any government.
For many years, Taiwan authorities claimed that the country which boasts the world's second highest population density needed to check the growth of its population because it ate away at economic growth.
However, nearby Singapore which has a population density higher than that of Taiwan, is thriving and its people live in harmony with the environment. This fact betrays authorities' claims.
Unfortunately, the policy of checking population growth has borne fruit in recent years, with the country's birth rate falling to the world's lowest.
And the dwindling birth rate has boomeranged against the country's economy by cutting down it's consumption, which in turn dampens its economic growth significantly.
Now the authorities are making a u-turn by encouraging people to have more children, but without financial resources to support it, the campaign will hardly make any difference in the near future.
