Disputed Local Government Act amendments clears legislature

Taipei, Jan. 18 (CNA) A controversial bill initiated by the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) to amend the Local Government Act cleared the legislature Monday amid a brawl among lawmakers of different political stripes.
The newly passed amendments will facilitate creation of four new municipalities at the end of this year.
As the KMT-initiated amendments allow some elected township chiefs to be automatically reappoined as district chiefs of the new municipalities, the opposition Democratic Progressive Party had tried hard to bar their passage, but to no avail as the KMT controls an absolute majority of legislative seats.
