Busy weekend for hopefuls in DPP municipality election nominations

Kaohsiung, Jan. 17 (CNA) The mayor of Kaohsiung City, the magistrate of Kaohsiung County, the mayor of Tainan City and the magistrate of Tainan County were busy this weekend competing for an early start in seeking the opposition Democratic Progressive Party's nomination as candidates for the new Kaohsiung and Tainan special municipalities.
The DPP has announced that at the end of May, the party will nominate its candidates for the December elections of administrative heads of the two special municipalities.
As Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County will combine into a single municipality, while Tainan City and Tainan County will also become a single municipality, the four incumbent administrators, who are all DPP members, consider themselves hopefuls for the posts.
While Tainan Mayor Hsu Tien-Tsai set up a campaign office in Tainan County Sunday, Tainan Magistrate Su Huan-chih that same day opened his first campaign office in downtown Tainan City.
Similar cross-the-border attempts were seen in Kaohsiung City and Kaohsiung County, as Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu attended temple festivities in Kaohsiung County, while Kaohsiung Magistrate Yang Chiu-hsiung went to the commercial sector in Kaohsiung City to distribute campaign pamphlets.
Meanwhile, another DPP heavyweight, former Premier Su Tseng-chang, told his supporters at a cultural event in Taipei that he honored suggestions from friends and supporters regarding representing the party in the elections of special municipality chiefs and the 2012 presidential election, but will concentrate on assisting party members win the legislative by-elections in late February.
