London's FTSE-100 index ends year up 22 pct

London's benchmark stock index ended the year 22 percent higher than on the first day of trading in January.
The Financial Times-Stock Exchange 100-share index closed up 15.02 points at 5412.88 when trading ended at midday Thursday.
The "Footsie" fell by 31 percent during 2008.
During 2009, the index fell as low at 3,460.70 in March as Britain struggled through its deepest recession since World War II.
