DPP to name candidate for merged Kaohsiung by late March

Kaohsiung, Dec. 31 (CNA) The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) will name its candidate for the mayoral election of the new special municipality to be formed by merger of Kaohsiung city and county by late March, DPP Secretary-General Su Jia-chyuan said Thursday.
Su made the announcement after visiting incumbent Kaohsiung Magistrate Yang Chiu-hsing and Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu, both of whom are DPP heavyweights, both of whom enjoy high approval ratings and both of whom have shown a keen interest in vying for the post in an election slated for late 2010.
Su said the DPP's Central Standing Committee will complete the nomination in February or by the end of March and he expressed hope that "it will be a peaceful competition between two gentlemen." The county and city in southern Taiwan will be combined into a single administrative area next year and the election of its first mayor will take place next December.
Chen urged the committee to field an eligible candidate who can meet voters' expectations and stressed that the candidate must be produced without causing a split within the party.
Meanwhile, both Yang and Chen have stepped up their efforts to increase their visibility on either side's turf by erecting large billboards with their photos wherever they can.
