Taiwan's Ma links China meet to domestic consensus

Taiwan's president says a meeting with his Chinese counterpart should wait until there is a domestic consensus on relations with the mainland.
The comment by President Ma Ying-jeou was published in the Dec. 30 edition of the German magazine Internationale Politik and released by Ma's office on Thursday.
It appears to exclude any meeting between Ma and Chinese President Hu Jintao before 2012, when Hu leaves office.
The main opposition Democratic Progressive Party is strongly opposed to Ma's efforts to improve relations between the sides and would almost certainly condemn any such meeting.
Earlier this year officials in Ma's ruling Nationalist Party speculated that Hu and Ma might get together.
China and Taiwan split amid civil war in 1949.
