UN experts criticize Thailand's expulsion of Hmong

Two U.N. human rights experts have criticized the Thai government for deporting 4,500 ethnic Hmong refugees to neighboring Laos.
Manfred Nowak and Jorge A. Bustamante say Thailand failed to check whether the Hmong risk torture in their home country before expelling them earlier this week.
The experts say some of the Hmong fled Laos decades ago and have since been recognized as refugees by the United Nations.
Nowak, the U.N.'s independent torture investigator, told The Associated Press by telephone Thursday he was "extremely concerned and disappointed" by Thailand's decision to expel the Hmong.
He called for the well-being of the Hmong who were deported to be monitored and said he would accept any invitation by the Laos government to visit the country.
