Suspected rebels kill 4 Indian soldiers in Kashmir

Gunmen ambushed and fatally shot four Indian paramilitary troops in troubled Kashmir on Wednesday, police said, blaming the attack on Muslim militants.
The assailants fled after the attack on the paramilitary patrol on the outskirts of Sopore, a town 35 miles (55 kilometers) northwest of Indian Kashmir's main city of Srinagar, said Farooq Ahmed, an inspector-general of police.
The firing from automatic weapons left the soldiers with no time to retaliate, Ahmed told The Associated Press.
Two soldiers of India's Central Reserve Police Force died on the scene and another two later in a hospital, he said.
No one claimed responsibility for the attack.
However, Ahmed blamed it on insurgents fighting for Kashmir's independence from India or its merger with Pakistan since 1989. More than 68,000 people have been killed in the conflict.
India accuses Pakistan of arming and training the rebels, a charge Islamabad denies.
India and Pakistan have fought three wars, two of them over control of Kashmir, since they won independence from Britain in 1947.
Kashmir is divided between the longtime rivals and they both claim the Himalayan territory in entirety.
