Hmong repatriated

Laos has responded to a U.N. appeal for access to 4,500 ethnic Hmong who were forcibly repatriated from Thailand by saying an immediate visit would "complicate" matters.
Lao Foreign Ministry spokesman Khenthong Nuanthasing says international observers are welcome at a later date after the resettlement process is completed.
Thailand deported the Hmong on Monday. It ignored pleas by the U.N., the U.S. and others that fear the Hmong could face persecution by the Lao government.
The repatriation all but ended the Hmong's three-decade search for asylum following their alliance with the U.S. during the Vietnam War.
The comments yesterday came after the U.N. refugee agency said it had asked the Lao government for access to the Hmong.
