Taiwan official: No political talks with China yet

A senior Taiwanese official says the time is not ripe for the island to hold political talks with rival China because the two sides lack enough mutual trust.
Yesterday's statement by Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council Vice Chairman Chao Chien-min comes amid steadily improving ties between Taipei and Beijing.
Chao says Taiwan is focusing only on trade issues in its China relations. He says political talks are impossible for now because China deploys over 1,000 missiles targeted at Taiwan.
Taiwan and China split amid civil war in 1949. China still claims Taiwan as its territory and is determined to retake the island by force if necessary.
Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou has forged closer China ties to boost Taiwan's economy since he took office last May.
