Share prices rise above 8,100 on local bourse

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) Taiwan's share prices rose 0.72 percent to end above the 8,100-point mark for the first time in nearly 19 months Wednesday on optimism that the economy is gradually recovering from recession.
The weighted index, the market's key barometer, increased 58.45 points to close at 8,112.28.
Following small Wall Street losses overnight and pullbacks in Asian markets, the local bourse opened at 8,078.91 and traded between 8,118.63 and 8,060.33 during the session.
A total of 5.18 billion shares changed hands on heavy market turnover of NT$155.26 billion (US$4.82 billion).
All of the eight major stock categories gained ground, with electronics and machinery issues advancing the most at 0.8 percent, banking and financial issues gaining 0.7 percent, foodstuff shares increasing 0.6 percent, and textile shares as well as construction issues both advancing 0.5 percent.
Cement stocks gained 0.4 percent and paper and pulp shares, as well as plastics and chemicals, both increased 0.2 percent.
Gainers outnumbered losers 1,735 to 108, with 308 stocks remaining unchanged.
Foreign institutional investors were net buyers of NT$9.61 billion-worth of shares.
