Danish cyclist Villumsen to ride for NZ

Danish road cyclist Linda Villumsen switched allegiance to New Zealand and hopes to ride for her adopted country at next year's Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.
The 24-year-old Villumsen was third in the time trial at this year's world championships, representing Denmark, and fifth in the women's road race at last year's Olympic Games. She has lived in New Zealand intermittently since she was 17 and recently gained full citizenship.
"Since I arrived here I have had a lot of support from BikeNZ and from everyone around and I feel that this support is giving me so much more than I have had before," Villumsen said.
She said her former coach in Denmark had told her she would be embarrassed by her decision to ride for New Zealand.
"It is in the back of my head and it doesn't go away because he was serious," Villumsen said.
"I don't feel that way. I feel only that I am proud of this."
Villumsen will continue to ride professionally in Europe for Team Columbia Highroad.
