Sudan approves disputed referendum law for South

A southern Sudanese official says parliament unanimously approved a law for a referendum on whether south Sudan can become independent.
The law's passage on Tuesday capped two years of disagreement over the legislation.
Pagan Amum of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement says the law's approval will avert Sudan from slipping back to the bitter north-south civil war of 21 years. That war ended with a 2005 peace deal that created a temporary unity government and called for a 2011 referendum on southern independence.
Southerners said the ruling northern party had tried to change the law in a way that could have tempered the results of the referendum.
Observers believe most southerners want independence.
