Taiwan ranks as Asia's 8th-largest host country for 2008

Taipei, Dec. 29 (CNA) Taiwan ranked eighth in Asia in terms of the number of international meetings it hosted in 2008, according to a report released Tuesday by the Council for Economic Planning and Development (CEPD).
Citing statistics compiled by the Dutch-based International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), the CEPD said Taiwan was host to 79 international meetings in that year.
Japan, where 247 meetings took place, remained Asia's largest host country for 2008, the CEPD said.
Meanwhile, Taipei, which played host to 52 meetings, was Asia's ninth-largest host city in 2008.
The host city list was topped by Singapore, which was host to a total of 118 meetings.
In 2008, the production value of Taiwan's convention and exhibition industry amounted to NT$25.74 billion, with 9,936 people employed in the sector, the CEPD said.
It noted that from this year, the government is promoting two flagship projects in an effort to expand the scale of the industry.
In addition, the government will further seek to simplify the entry procedures for foreigners and Chinese nationals and relax entry restrictions to facilitate visits by international businessmen and buyers, according to the CEPD.
