Gaza aid convoy heads to Syria for transit

An international aid convoy bound for the Gaza Strip has left Jordan's Red Sea port of Aqaba and is heading to Syria after striking a deal with Egyptian authorities over its transit course.
Alice Howard, a spokeswoman for the British-based Viva Palestina, says the 150-vehicle convoy carrying hundreds of tons of humanitarian supplies is now heading to the Syrian port of Latakia. From there, it will sail to Egyptian port of El Arish, and then to Gaza.
More than 400 group members had staged a hunger strike on Sunday over Egypt's refusal to allow the group in through the Red Sea. Egypt insisted the convoy use a Mediterranean route closer to the Gaza border.
The group hopes to join Palestinians in a nonviolent march to the Israeli border on Thursday.
