2010 Vienna Philharmonic concert to be simulcast on January 1st

To celebrate the coming year 2010, the Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Concert conducted for the second time by the French conductor Georges Pretre will be simulcast on the big screen in Taichung City, Changhua County, Taichung County, and Kaohsiung County.
It has long been a Philharmonic tradition to present a program on New Year's Day including lively and nostalgic music from the vast repertoire of the Strauss family and their musical contemporaries. The first New Year's Concert took place on Jan. 1, 1941 in Austria and has been considered the world's largest classical music event.
The yearly event not only attracts music lovers from all over the world to fly to Wien City, but has also gained international popularity through radio and television live broadcasts worldwide. And only Taiwan has outdoor television broadcasts.
"The concert will be simulcast to over 80 countries on New Year's Day. This is the second time for the Council for Cultural Affairs to hold outdoor broadcasts," said Emile Sheng, minister of the CCA. Sheng will reportedly dance the waltz at the Wei-Wu-Ying Park in Kaohsiung County.
The program includes the works of Otto Nicolai, Jacques Offenbach, Hans Christian Lumbye, Eduard Strauss, Josef Strauss, Johann Strauss, and Johann Strauss Vater.
"Most Taiwan music lovers enjoy polka, waltz and marches, especially the Blue Danube Waltz composed by Johann Strauss," said Chang Chen-chieh, associate professor of Soochow University.
The last encore piece is the Radetzky March composed by Johann Strauss Vater in 1848. When it was first played, Austrian officers and soldiers in attendance promptly clapped their hands and stomped their feet. This has been passed on down the years and audiences are now familiar with the tradition.
Before the march is played next month, the 86-year-old conductor will send people all over the world a New Year's greeting in the spirit of hope, friendship and peace.
On Jan. 1, 2010, that same concert will be presented in Vienna at 11a.m. (local time), will run on the Financial Channel of Taiwan Television at 6:15p.m. (Taipei time), and rerun on the Main Channel of TTV at 11:30p.m.
