Jordan's king names prime minister-designate

Jordan's King Abdullah II has named a close confidant as the new prime minister-designate, following the resignation of the country's Cabinet hours earlier.
The 29-member Cabinet resigned On Wednesday amid criticism it failed to ease high unemployment and improve living conditions. The Muslim opposition has also rebuked it as being unable to hold impartial parliamentary elections.
Samir Rifai, a former royal court secretary and an advisor to Abdullah, replaces Nader al-Dahabi.
Al-Dahabi has told the king his government is unable to meet a deadline for holding parliament elections by March 2010 because it needs more time to introduce a new electoral law.
Abdullah told Rifai in a designation letter he can take the time needed to form his Cabinet.
