Cell phone sales get boost from India

The meteoric rise in the number of India's mobile subscribers is a boon to the region's mobile services market, industry tracker IDC said in its latest study.
"Innovative prepaid offerings were a significant driver boosting mobile penetration in both emerging as well as mature markets. At the same time, the region's fastest growing market is India, where pent up demand for mobile services coupled with expansion in network coverage, led to a phenomenal 58 percent surge in subscribers," said Alayne Wong, a research manager of Mobile Communications Research in IDC Asia-Pacific.
More good news awaits, Wong said.
Despite India's dynamic performance, mobile penetration in the world's second most populated market is still lagging far behind the region's and stood at a low seven percent signifying further growth potential for the coming years, she continued.
"(The year) 2005 also saw industry consolidation which yielded stronger and larger players, encouraging uptake in new 3G markets, and operator plans to shift technology focus," Wong said.
"These developments lay the groundwork for further upside, as service providers prime themselves to cope with an increasingly competitive landscape which result from more deregulation and reforms, and the introduction of new competing technologies and services."
Total mobile subscribers are projected to reach 1.05 billion by 2010 for the aggregated 10 key markets of Australia, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Philippines, the PRC, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand, according to IDC's latest report "Asia-Pacific - excluding Japan - Mobile Services 2006-2010 Forecast Update: 2005 Year-End Review."
Last year, the mobile services market of the Asia-Pacific - excluding Japan - enjoyed dynamic growth, IDC said. The number of subscribers rose 19 percent to 628.5 million, and revenue amounted to US$81.4 billion representing an 18 percent increase over 2004.
India's rise is a godsend since China is entering "a period of uncertainly from impending industry restructuring," according to IDC.
India's robust mobile services market will buoy up the region, enjoying an 11 percent compound annual growth rate over 2006 to 2010, the industry tracker added.
