Thai police ready to extradite fugitive banker

Thai police plan to be in Vancouver Thursday, in the hope that the Supreme Court of Canada will end the legal odyssey of fugitive banker Rakesh Saxena and pave the way for his extradition.
Saxena has been fighting for 13 years to avoid being returned to Thailand to face charges he embezzled US$88 million from a Bangkok bank.
The Supreme Court of Canada will release its decision Thursday as to whether it will grant him leave to appeal his deportation order.
In June, the B.C. Court of Appeal rejected his bid to overturn earlier rulings upholding his removal.
Deborah Strachan, a lawyer for Canada's federal attorney general who is acting for the Thai government, said Wednesday that Thai police intend to be in Canada for the release of the decision.
