DR to Washington Nationals: Pay $40K in damages

A Dominican Republic tribunal ordered the Washington Nationals to pay $40,000 in damages to a former talent scout who was fired after he signed a prospect who lied about his name and age.
Jose Baez, the Nationals' former baseball operations director in the Dominican Republic, sued the team for what he said was an unjustified firing.
In 2006, Baez and special assistant to the general manager, Jose Rijo, signed whom they thought was a 16-year-old prospect for $1.4 million.
It turned out that shortstop Esmailyn Gonzalez was four years older than believed, and his real name was Carlos Daniel Alvarez Lugo.
Rijo also was fired after the scandal broke.
A Major League Baseball investigator, Nelson Tejeda, said Baez was hardworking and dedicated, according to court documents.
Fernando Ravelo, the Nationals' current baseball operations director in the Dominican Republic, said on Wednesday he was not aware of the court's decision and declined comment.
The court issued its order last Friday.
