DR lands $100M in Taiwanese funds for development

Taiwan has agreed to provide the Dominican Republic with $100 million in funding over the next four years for projects related to health and development.
Half will be in the form of loans and the rest a donation, the Caribbean nation's government said in a statement.
El Diario Libre newspaper reported that $2 million will go toward building hospital and pediatric emergency rooms. Another $4 million will help develop an office park in Santo Domingo that is a telecommunications center for international companies.
The government has not said how the rest will be used. The agreement was signed Tuesday.
Taiwan and rival China have long wooed Caribbean nations with donations and loans to secure diplomatic recognition. Beijing considers the self-governing island a renegade province.
Several islands, including Bahamas and Grenada, have switched allegiances as they sought funding for various projects.
