NATO: Russia may help more in Afghanistan

NATO says Russia may provide military assistance to the embattled Afghan government security forces.
Alliance spokesman James Appathurai says talks between NATO's Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Russian leaders next month will focus on areas of common interest, among which Afghanistan is "an obvious one."
NATO commanders have said in the past that Moscow should provide more military assistance to Afghan forces since they are mostly armed with Russian weaponry. These include Kalashnikov assault rifles and other weapons.
Despite differences over NATO enlargement and other issues, the two sides have been cooperating closely in the Afghan war. Moscow has allowed NATO to ship its supplies to Afghanistan through Russian territory to supplant the dangerous route through Pakistan.
