Stocks slide in early trading

U.S. stocks are sliding in early trading as investors grow more cautious about the strength of an economic recovery.
The market is extending its losses into Wednesday after weakening a day earlier following a disappointing reading on consumer confidence.
A new report showing durable goods orders rose in line with expectations in September had little effect on trading.
Traders are also awaiting a report that is expected to show new home sales rose in September.
The Dow Jones industrial average is down 36.81, or 0.4 percent, at 9,845.36. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 4.78, or 0.5 percent, at 1,058.63, while the Nasdaq composite index is down 15.93, or 0.8 percent, at 2,100.16.
