Somali pirates detained after firing on vessel

Somali pirates exchanged fire with a French fishing vessel on Wednesday and after speeding away were later stopped and detained by Spanish and German naval units, said the European Union anti-piracy force.
Cmdr. John Harbour, a spokesman for the force, said pirates in two skiffs fired on the French vessel about 350 miles east of the Somali capital Mogadishu. The vessel had armed guards onboard and returned fire.
The pirates then fled the scene but stopped when a Spanish naval helicopter patrolling the area fired warning shots at them, the force said in a statement Wednesday.
Seven pirates were detained on the German naval vessel, FGS Karlsruhe, after the French vessel's crew identified them, the statement said.
Somalia, which has not had an effective central government for 18 years, became the world's top piracy hotspot last year. Somali pirates have increased their attacks in recent weeks, following a monthslong monsoon season that had made waters too rough for piracy.
Somali pirates are currently holding seven ships with around 150 crew members.
