MAN gets Turkish engine order worth over

German machinery builder MAN SE said Wednesday it won a contract with Karadeniz Powership Co. Ltd. of Turkey to supply up to 24 engines to be used to generate power-grid electricity from aboard ships.
MAN, based in Munich, said the deal, worth more than ⁈llion ($148 million), will also include electromechanical equipment necessary for electricity generation.
MAN said initially, 21 engines will be installed on board four former freighters that are being converted to mobile diesel power plants. The ships, which have their own propulsion, will be able to travel, generate power and connect to local power grids to temporarily cover power demands where there is insufficient electric service.
Karadeniz Powership is expected to use the ships around the Mediterranean, Africa, Pakistan and other regions in the Middle East.
MAN, which is best known for its trucks and buses, also builds large engines for marine shipping and power generation. MAN said the powerships would be the first of their kind in the world.
Shares of MAN were down nearly 3 percent at ⁈in Frankfurt afternoon trading.
