UK government does about-face on military cuts

A senior British lawmaker says the government has abandoned plans to slash 20 million pounds ($32 million) from the budget of a reserve army force whose members have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Former Defense Secretary John Reid said Tuesday that Prime Minister Gordon Brown had personally intervened to stop the cuts to the Territorial Army, the largest of Britain's reserve forces.
Earlier this month, it was announced that weekend exercises and other routine training for the force would stop for six months because of budget cuts.
Hundreds of the Territorial Army's part-time soldiers have been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Defense officials had insisted that all troops being sent to combat zones would receive adequate training.
