Atletico beats Marbella 2-0 in Copa del Rey

Atletico Madrid ended its recent run of dire results by beating third-division Marbella 2-0 in a Copa del Rey round of 32 match on Tuesday.
La Liga contender Sevilla beat third-division Atletico Ciudad 4-2 with two goals from Luis Fabiano; and Recreativo Huelva drew 1-1 with Sporting Gijon.
Later, Real Madrid will begin its cup campaign with a derby against third-division Alcorcon. On Wednesday defending champion Barcelona will play Cultural Leonesa.
The return legs will be played on Nov. 10.
In Quique Sanchez Flores' first game as Atletico coach following the sacking of Abel Resino last week, the Madrid team took the lead in the 18th minute through an own goal by Marbella. Maxi Rodriguez scored the second eight minutes from fulltime.
Atletico is 17th in the Spanish league with only one win from seven games.
Sanchez Flores rested his first-choice strikers Diego Forlan and Sergio Aguero, using Florent Sinama-Pongolle instead. He deployed Jose Antonio Reyes, who was sidelined for much of Resino's reign, on the left flank.
Atletico took control of the midfield during the first half yet had few scoring chances.
In the eighth, Jose Manuel Jurado crossed for Sinama-Pongolle, who struck the post.
In the 18th, Marbella's Antonio Troyano misjudged his attempt to chest the ball back to goalkeeper Alejandro Avila, putting the visitors 1-0 up.
Atletico's Maxi Rodriguez dribbled through Marbella's defense in the 35th before sending a shot bouncing off the right-hand post. Moments later Jurado cut in from the left and found Sinama-Pongolle again before the French striker lost possession as he was about to shoot.
In the second half Atletico continued to dominate possession although some of the nervy form which has plagued the team this season resurfaced, giving Marbella several chances.
Atletico goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo had to rush off his line soon after the break when a high Marbella free kick into the area unsettled his defense.
Marbella's Ignacio Perez carved out his team's best chance when he shot straight at Asenjo from close range in the 75th.
Aguero replaced Sinama-Pongolle for the last 20 minutes.
In the 82nd, Rodriguez ran on to Simao Sabrosa's pass down the right and scored.
