Russian news agencies say a criminal slander case has been filed against a leading human rights activist on behalf of Chechnya's president.
The reports on state news agencies RIA-Novosti and ITAR-Tass cite Andrei Krasnenkov, a lawyer for Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, as saying the case was opened last week against Oleg Orlov, chairman of the group Memorial.
Kadyrov sued Orlov for saying that he bore responsibility for the July abduction and killing of Natalya Estemirova, head of Memorial's Chechnya office. A court this month ruled against Orlov, ordered him to pay 70,000 rubles ($2,300) and retract the statement.
The new charges carry possible prison time. Orlov could not be reached for comment late Tuesday.
