Spanish police say they have broken up a gang that arranged around 100 bogus marriages for immigrants seeking residency papers and arrested 34 suspects including a priest.
A police statement says the gang charged ⁈ ($15,000) to ⁈ ($18,000) to set up fake unions, and that most of the foreigners who used the service were Colombians involved in drug trafficking.
Spaniards who agreed to marry such people were generally paid ⁈($4,500). Others would receive ⁈300) to pose as witnesses at wedding ceremonies.
The statement issued Tuesday says those detained include a priest, a civil servant and a lawyer.
