Clinton `encouraged' at outlook in Afghanistan

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says she is encouraged at the prospect of a clear resolution emerging soon to the disputed Afghan presidential election.
Speaking to reporters at the State Department, Clinton said she has spoken a number of times to President Hamid Karzai in recent days and that he told her he will announce his intentions Tuesday.
She did not say whether he would announce that he accepts the results of a vote-fraud investigation that has set the stage for a possible run-off election with his closest challenger, Abdullah Abdullah.
Clinton said she has received assurances from the top U.S. commander in Afghan, as well as from Afghan authorities, that it is possible to conduct a second election before paralyzing winter snows start.
