Brown appeals to China over death row Brit

British officials say Prime Minister Gordon Brown has appealed to China's president to spare the life of a British man on death row.
Akhmal Shaikh faces the death penalty for taking a suitcase containing almost 9 pounds (4 kilograms) of heroin into the far western Chinese city of Urumqi.
Family and supporters argue that Shaikh is delusional or bipolar. The Foreign Office says Chinese officials have ignored its repeated requests to take the 53-year-old's mental health into account.
The Foreign Office said Monday that Brown has written to Chinese President Hu Jintao about the matter and raised it with senior Chinese foreign policy adviser Dai Bingguo during his visit to London.
China has defended the integrity of the case.
