AIT announces launching of 2010 democracy video challenge

Taipei, Oct. 13 (CNA) The Taipei-based American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) on Tuesday announced the launch of the 2010 Democracy Video Challenge (DVC), a worldwide contest aimed at enhancing the global dialogue on democracy.
Now in its second year, the contests asks budding filmmakers, democracy advocates, and the general public to create video shorts that complete the phrase "Democracy is…, " according to an AIT press release.
The 2009 DVC attracted over 900 submissions worldwide, including nine from Taiwan. The winning film for the East Asia and the Pacific Region was from the Philippines.
"We appreciated the compelling entries submitted to the challenge last year by filmmakers from Taiwan. We hope that this year's competition will attract an even greater number of participants, " Scott Robinson, the director of AIT's American Cultural Center, was quoted as saying.
"Given Taiwan's vibrant democracy and creativity in filmmaking, it would be nice to see a film from Taiwan among the finalists, " he added.
According to the press release, seven winning videos will be chosen -- one each from Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, Europe, the Near East and North Africa, South ad Central Asia, and the Western Hemisphere, as well as one anonymous video.
Using YouTube as the video platform for the challenge, the winners will be granted an all-expenses paid trip to Washington D.C., New York, and Hollywood, where gala screenings of the winning videos will be held, it added.
They will also meet with film directors, public officials and democracy advocates from non-governmental organizations in the U.S., and visit film and television program sets.
The AIT said that it will hold a screening to evaluate submissions in Taiwan.
Taiwan partners of the challenge include the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, Council for Cultural Affairs, Chinese Taipei Film Archive, Taiwan Film and Culture Association, SPOT Taipei Film House, National Taipei University of the Arts and National Taiwan University of the Arts.
The deadline for submissions to the 2010 DVC is Jan. 31, 2010.
