Tamil Tiger rebels escape from prisonCOLOMBO, Sri Lanka
Eight suspected Tamil Tiger rebels escaped from a prison in eastern Sri Lanka yesterday, possibly with the help of prison officials, a police officer said.
"There were eight suspects (who) escaped. This is what they (prison officials) have told us," said Nihal Karunaratne, senior police official for the eastern district of Batticaloa. "This has to be an inside job," Karunaratne said.
He said the suspects broke out after being freed from their jail cells to bathe in the morning.
Police were searching for the eight, and for evidence that prison officials helped them flee, he said. No other details were immediately available.
Cocaine seized
NEW DELHI, India
Officials from India's Narcotics Control Bureau have seized 200 kilograms of cocaine being smuggled into the country in a cargo vessel, newspapers reported yesterday, of what was said to be the largest ever drug haul here.
The consignment, worth tens of millions of dollars on the Indian market, was seized at a Bombay port on Saturday, the Indian Express newspaper said.
"This is unprecedented," the report quoted K.C. Verma, chief of the Narcotics Control Bureau, as saying.
Verma said the bureau had received information on the incoming consignment about a month and half ago. He said it was lifted from Colombia, taken to Hong Kong and then brought to Mombai.
Officials found canvas bags containing the drug, stashed between logs of teak wood in a container on board of the ship S L Voyager, the report said.
Military plane crashes
BEIJING, China
A military transport plane carrying 40 people crashed in eastern China's Anhui province, the government said yesterday. A local official said at least five people were killed.
Villagers described a chaotic crash scene, with bodies and body parts strewn across a mountain slope where the plane crashed and burned.
The official Xinhua News Agency said Saturday's crash was under investigation, citing a military staffer who's name was not given. The staffer told Xinhua that 40 people, including "crew members and other people" were on board when the plane went down.
He did not have any information about casualties, Xinhua said.
An official who answered the phone at the Anhui provincial government office said the accident occurred at about 4 p.m. (local time) in Yaocun, a village in Anhui's eastern Guangde county, and that five bodies had been recovered.
The official, who refused to give his name, said it was unclear how many people had been aboard the plane.
Nurse recovering
JAKARTA, Indonesia
Local tests have come back negative for an Indonesian nurse who fell ill after treating two siblings infected with bird flu, amid a surge in deaths from the virus.
"Thank God, the result came back negative," Hariadi Wibisono, a senior Health Ministry official said yesterday.
He said specimens would be sent to a World Health Organization-approved laboratory in Hong Kong for confirmation.
The 25-year-old nurse is improving and will likely be released this week after finishing the full course of Tamiflu, said Dr. Hadi Jusuf of Hasan Sadikin Hospital.
