174 H1N1 hospitalized cases in Taiwan: health officials

Taipei, Sept. 10 (CNA) Another 13 patients with influenza A(H1N1) were hospitalized Thursday, bringing the total number of hospitalized cases in Taiwan to 174, the Central Epidemic Command Center under the Cabinet-level Department of Health reported the same day.
The 13 new hospitalized patients, six are women and seven men, all range in age from 8-60 years, the center said.
There have been 11 deaths among the hospitalized cases since the outbreak of the disease in Taiwan. Some 48 patients remain in hospitals while 115 have been discharged.
Most of the new hospitalized cases were in northern Taiwan, as the number of people with H1N1 symptoms seeking medical attention at local hospitals has markedly increased in the past week, it said.
The center attributed the increase in the number of cases to the cooler weather and in part to the start of the new semester that has seen more H1N1 cluster infections among students.
As of Sept. 8, a total of 5,474 students across the country had been confirmed with A(H1N1) , according to statistics from the Ministry of Education.
Some 3,138 cases were at elementary schools, 1,304 at senior high schools, 913 at junior high schools, 69 at colleges and universities and 50 at kindergartens, the figures show.
