Iraqi lawmaker calls on Iran to open key waterway

An Iraqi lawmaker has urged Iran to allow Iraq access to a disputed waterway between the two countries so southern Iraq can battle a severe water shortage.
Lawmaker Wail Abdul-Latif says the city of Basra faces an agricultural disaster.
He said Wednesday that more than half the population of a farming village nearby left because there is no potable water to drink or maintain crops.
He says the water shortage is now hitting Basra.
The waterway _ known as Shatt al-Arab in Iraq and Arvand River in Iran _ is Iraq's only outlet to the sea.
Iran controls access to a key part of the waterway that provides water to Basra and some of its farming communities. Iraq and Iran are in a dispute over where the border should be in the waterway.
