Obraniak gets call up for Poland's WCup qualifiers

Poland coach Leo Beenhakker called up French-born midfielder Ludovic Obraniak for the team's World Cup qualifiers against Northern Ireland and Slovenia.
Obraniak, who recently received Polish citizenship, scored two goals in his Poland debut against Greece in a friendly three weeks ago. The 24-year-old Lille midfielder should provide a boost to a Polish squad that's in fourth place in Group 3.
Beenhakker also called up Euzebiusz Smolarek, despite the attacking midfielder's recent club troubles. The 28-year-old Smolarek, who has spearheaded Poland's attack for the past two years, has been without a club since he was released by Racing Santander earlier this month.
Poland hosts Northern Ireland on Sept. 5, then travels to Slovenia four days later.
Slovakia leads the group with 15 points from six matches, ahead of Northern Ireland with 13 points and Slovenia with 11 points _ both from seven games.
Poland has 10 points from six matches.
