Inglis returns to club pending assault hearing

Australia test center Greg Inglis will be allowed to return to his Melbourne Storm team for the rest of the National Rugby League season pending a second court appearance for assaulting his girlfriend.
Inglis had been under an indefinite playing ban after he was charged with recklessly causing injury and unlawful assault over an incident on Aug. 9 which allegedly left his girlfriend, Sally Robinson, with a black eye.
The 22-year-old Inglis appeared in a Melbourne court on Aug. 12 when he was granted bail to return on Oct. 14.
"Given all the information we have received at this stage, we believe in fairness, and (it is) in the best interests of Greg Inglis' well-being that he resumes his playing responsibilities," Storm chief executive Brian Waldron said Thursday.
"I have spoken to NRL CEO David Gallop and he has accepted the decision. In no way do we expect this decision by the board to influence or interfere with the current judicial proceedings relating to the matter."
Inglis has scored 13 tries in 12 tests for Australia.
He was made one of the faces of the NRL's revamped million-dollar advertising campaign in March after the league dropped the television commercial featuring Brett Stewart when the Manly fullback was charged with sexual assault.
Inglis is the sixth NRL player charged with assaulting a female in 12 months.
