Mexico calls to regulate toxic diet supplements

Mexican health authorities are asking legislators to require dietary supplements to submit to the same registration requirements as medicines, after inspectors found evidence of toxic substances in some weight-reduction products.
The Federal Commission for Protection Against Health Risks says it has found 15 products that contain potentially dangerous substances, including yellow oleander, which can cause heart problems.
Currently, supplement manufacturers only need to advise the government of the product they are selling. They do not need permission to put their products on the market.
The commission urged consumers Wednesday not to buy such products _ either because they have not been proven effective or they could be dangerous.
