Group that opposes gay marriage targeting Iowa

A group that opposes gay marriage is focusing on Iowa, hoping to overturn a state Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage in the Midwestern state.
The National Organization for Marriage has launched the Reclaim Iowa Project, targeting legislative races in the state in an effort to elect candidates who support putting the issue of gay marriage before voters.
Iowa is one of six U.S. states that allow same-sex marriage. The others are in the northeast _ Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire.
The group's effort is beginning with a Sept. 1 special election in southeastern Iowa, where it's supporting Republican Stephen Burgmeier. He faces Democrat Curt Hanson.
The group has spent $90,000 on a television ad campaign supporting Burgmeier that began airing Monday.
Attorney Camilla Taylor, who represented same-sex couples in a lawsuit that led to April's Iowa Supreme Court decision, says she's confident Iowa residents will oppose the group's effort to ban gay marriage.
