2 plead not guilty in US hate crime

Two teenagers have pleaded not guilty to a hate crime charge in the beating of an Ecuadorean immigrant on Long Island.
Suffolk County police say the incident occurred in the same neighborhood where another Ecuadorean man was fatally stabbed in a bias attack last fall.
The suspects entered their plea in a Suffolk County court on Wednesday. They were charged with assault as a hate crime.
Police say the 20-year-old victim was robbed and beaten by the two white teens who used ethnic slurs. A 20-year-old previously was arrested in the Aug. 15 incident in Patchogue, New York.
The U.S. Justice Department has been investigating bias crimes on eastern Long Island. Patchogue is located about 50 miles (80 kilometers) east of Manhattan.
