London police 'steal' from unlocked cars

British police say they're combing the upscale southwest London neighborhood of Richmond for things to steal.
Scotland Yard said Tuesday that police in Richmond were checking unlocked cars for valuables and, in one case, taking them.
The police force says the exercise is intended to remind vehicle owners to keep their doors locked, their windows closed and their possessions out of sight.
The force says officers on the lookout for unlocked cars will either write to the owners warning them or take property from the vehicle and leave a message advising them that it has been taken by the police for safekeeping.
But lawyer and Richmond resident Orlando Pownall was quoted by the BBC as saying police could be prosecuted for trespass.
