Right group: Abduction protesters beaten by police

A Russian human rights group says riot police beat and detained Wednesday several people who were protesting abductions in the volatile Dagestan province.
Police acknowledged that several men were detained after what they described as a clash.
The incident highlighted tension in Dagestan between authorities and civilians they view as Islamic militants or sympathizers. Dagestan borders war-scarred Chechnya.
The prominent rights group Memorial said more than 100 people gathered in a central square in the provincial capital to urge the authorities to put an end to abductions and other alleged abuses. Many were relatives of five men reported abducted recently, two of whom said they escaped and described a harrowing ordeal at the hands of their captors.
